How long does it take to get my operating authority?

The MC Number is available immediately when the electronic application is received by the
FMCSA. There are many websites that will talk about this because we all use the same system. However, even though we have obtained your MC Number you do not have operating authority yet. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issues the operating authority once certain qualifications have been completed.

Those qualifications are as follows:

  • Your pending MC Number must be published in the FMCSA Register (this can take 2-4 days).
  • Once your MC Number has been published in the Register you will start a ten day protest period.
  • Both your insurance and a form called the BOC-3 will have to be filed.

Once the protest period has ended and all filings are complete the FMCSA will issue final authority within the next few days. The average time to obtain your authority from start to finish is between 20-28 days.

What other things do I need to do to operate as a motor carrier?
There are additional licensing and registration requirements based on your operations. Some of the most common are:

Single State Registration.

This is how you register to operate in multiple states.

Obtaining an IFTA License if you operate trucks that are over 26,000 lbs GVW.
This is the license and decal you will need for fuel tax requirements.

Insurance Coverage.

You are required to carry minimum levels of insurance for your company and those insurances have to be on file with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Please call us for the minimum requirements for your type of operation.

Other Permits.

There are certain other permits that you may be required to obtain based on the state in which you reside and the states in which you intent to operate such as a KYU Number, a New York Hut Permit, or a New Mexico Tax ID Permit.

Please contact us by phone or email and we will determine if there are any additional permits you will need.
